Prince Naka no Ōe and Nakatomi no Kamatari orchestrated the killing of Soga no Iruka at court. The ensuing political changes became associated with the Taika reforms and stronger central authority. The reform program developed over time, and the chronicles’ account should not be read as proof that every measure took immediate effect.
