Categories: main-event

Tradition associates the formal presentation of Buddhist images and scriptures to the Yamato court with a mission from Baekje in either 538 or 552. The Nihon Shoki uses 552 and places the event under Kinmei; 538 does not fit his conventional accession date of 539. Migrants and traders probably brought Buddhist ideas earlier. The Soga family’s patronage helped the religion gain an enduring place at court.
