# Great Kantō earthquake (1923)

The earthquake of 1 September devastated Tokyo, Yokohama and surrounding areas, with fires causing much of the destruction. In the aftermath, false rumors fueled massacres of Koreans and attacks on other groups. Reconstruction changed the capital’s infrastructure and urban landscape.
