Location: Japan
Categories: main-event

The shogunate restricted Japanese overseas travel and return, while strengthening controls over foreign commerce. Japan continued to maintain selected channels of contact, including trade through Nagasaki and relations mediated by Tsushima, Satsuma and Matsumae. The later label sakoku can obscure these continuing connections.
